1st Sudan game

Finally got to have a game with my Sudan stuff last Sudnay and had a ball. We used Command Piquet for the game and really enjoyed the rule system except for the dice roll for turns. I like 90% of the package that is Piquet but the D20 Command dice roll off really leaves me cold, suffice to say that the British forces had verrrrry bad rolls and ended up reacting to everything the Fuzzies could throw at them. It was fun but sitting back and not doing anything except reacting to an opposing army gets a bit tedious, I will use the FOB rule next game as I feel it will give a much more enjoyable game.

Indian Mutiny painting has been going pretty well, I have finished 100 figures in the first month. I have yet to do the terrain details on the bases on these as I have had serious thoughts about the level I want to play at (Battalion or company). I have based them twice already and have finally decided to go for the original idea of companies on 40mm square bases, 4 bases a company much like the Sudan British. I was going to base these and photograph them this weekend but my better half decided to have a baby on Saturday, so I have had my hands a little full with our baby girl Sofie. Cheers Scott

Beautiful setup!

If you dislike the impetus swing in Command PK, you can easily just swap out the roll off rule with a zillion other variants out there. The FOB version is probably the most fair: basically both roll off with their CinC's quality die (from D8 to D12). Winner gets to choose who goes first, and EACH side gets the number of pips equal to the differences.

First off - congrats on the new ankle biter....

Second off - brilliant/fantastic/lovely looking game... what's the wheeled artillery piece in the background of picture 58???

Thanks guys, Steve the wheeled piece in the background is a British 9pdr which were used in the early years of the Sudan 1880-90? I have a screw gun and a nordenfeldt to paint yet as well as crew. Mandarin I will use the FOB version as I like the ability to actually move my forces which I didn't have as one of the British players in the game due to verrry bad command rolls. Cheers Scott

Cheers Derek, sorry I haven't got back to you, I will send you an email in the near future and catch up. I still can't believe it is over ten years since I saw you and Beth in Townsville. I see you are a big fan of Piquet as well, what impetus model do you like? Cheers Scott

G'Day Scott

Well I'm not actually all that phased with the impetus swings in Piquet, but I can understand the frustration that some people feel. I suppose Beth's good influence must be rubbing off on me.

Yes it must be close to 11 years now since we moved to Tasmania, it's been a while.

Cheers

Derek

Great stuff. Lovely looking game. Inspires me to get on with my own 28mm project.

Hi Scott,

Love all the hard work you have put into your Sudanese models (British & others). Reminds me of a book I read when I was a kid.

After re-reading this post for the 20th time (to busy looking at the nicely painted figures and terrain) I finally noticed your wife gave birth. Congratulations to you both on the addtion to you family. I hope you are all doing well.

This blog is great inspriation for me as a new Historical player in Australia in an area where it is not often played.

We now have a steady and growing following of Historical players from Flames of War, Warhammer Ancients, Field of Flory and now Napoleonics (thanks to the new Perry & Victrix Plastics). Looks like I don't have to drive to the sunshine coast to see Kevin and Yourself have a game after all!

I hope to catch up with you both one day gaming in Brisbane.

Keep posting you pictures as I always enjoy your work!

Happy gaming,

Allan
